Setting Goals - Holding Yourself Accountableby Goal Setter on 11 Apr 2012 permalink
Where do you want to be one year from now? Chances are, if you do nothing about it, you will be in the same situation or worse... Setting goals might be the answer. Why do some people feel that the world owes them a favour while others diligently make themselves accountable to decisions they have made? If you have set and achieved goals in the past all this is familiar to you although you might want to explore ways to tackle more difficult or long reaching goals. If you have never set goals before and are flying by the seat of your pants all this sounds like mumbo jumbo until the day of reckoning. The fact is that we are sometimes our worst enemies and self-deception is a reality - don't be deceived (!) Seriously you must admit that gritting your teeth is not going to be enough to make certain things happen. Solving problems and overcoming obstacles is what makes you stronger. Do not shy away from it. By the same token you will find that the most worthwhile goals won't come within your grasp easily. It's a fact of life. Get over it. While others will give-up when faced with adversity you will regather your thoughts and press-on. Sometimes it is still not enough. You have heard the phrase: "Everyone can eat an elephant as long as you eat it one spoonful at a time." So the idea is to break down a monumental task into a series of things you can manage. Two mindsets have recently worked against those who want to achieve something for themselves: impatience and greed. Advertising tells you that you deserve something and that you ought to have it now... The abundance of easy credit entices people to mortgage their future for something they don't really want. Setting goals will give you a chance to ponder on the value of what you are going after and justify the resources involved (time and money). The principle is simple. Just like a traveller driving from coast to coast you don't look for a road sign with your destination the moment you drive out of your suburb. Instead you use a map and have written down your itinerary - one town after another. Goals are the same. They need to be broken down into manageable milestones. Some tasks are independent (they can be started at anytime) while others are dependent of the completion of a former task (can't build the walls unless the foundation has been laid). Those organisation skills will come very handy if you find yourself working with a team rather than on your own.
